چکیده

The lasing characteristics of a photonic crystal membrane heterostructure cavity that utilises a kagome type lattice is demonstrated. A heterostucture cavity is formed by interfacing two photonic crystals such that the dispersion maximum of the inner lattice falls within the photonic bandgap of the surrounding lattice. Feedback to slow Bloch modes allows for localisation of band edge modes and a reduction of inplane losses. Singlemode lasing is observed in relatively large area lasers at 1550 nm.

Optical properties of photonic crystal heterostructure cavity lasers.

We design, fabricate, and test photonic crystal heterostructure cavity lasers in the InP material system. A heterostructure cavity is formed by interfacing two different photonic crystals such that a dispersion maximum of the inner lattice lies within the band gap of the surrounding lattice. Feedback to slow light modes of the central region results in a lower threshold and single mode operatio...

Edge-emitting photonic crystal double-heterostructure nanocavity lasers with InAs quantum dot active material.

We report what is, to the best of our knowledge, the first demonstration of an edge-emitting photonic crystal nanocavity laser that is integrated with a photonic crystal waveguide. This demonstration is achieved with a double-heterostructure photonic crystal nanocavity incorporating an InAs quantum dot active region.

Double-heterostructure photonic crystal lasers with lower thresholds and higher slope efficiencies obtained by quantum well intermixing.

In order to reduce the optical absorption loss, an array of double-heterostructure photonic crystal microcavity lasers was fabricated in which much of the photonic crystal mirror region was disordered by quantum well intermixing. In characterizing these devices, we obtained more than a factor of two increase in slope efficiencies and more than 20% reduction in threshold pump powers compared to ...

Design of high-Q Cavities in Photosensitive Material-based Photonic Crystal Slab Heterostructures

We propose a novel concept for creating high-Q cavities in photonic crystal slabs (PCS). We show that photonic crystal slab-based double heterostructure cavities, formed by variations in the refractive index, can have large a Q-factor (up to Q = 1× 10), and that such cavities can be implemented in chalcogenide glasses using their photosensitive properties. Efficient coupling between a photonic crystal nanocavity and a waveguide with directional end-facet emission

Monolithic integration of photonic crystal lasers and waveguides is proposed using quantum well intermixing. Coupling between a double-heterostructure nanocavity and a regular single-line-defect waveguide is optimized to have a high coupling efficiency (93%) and a high quality factor (6.8× 103) without fine-tuning of the lattice. The design is completed with a waveguide exit of robust direction...
